6. Fade To Black
Metallica's first "ballad", has two solos, one that starts the song and one that ends it. Both are, obviously, excellent, but it is it is that first one that all Metallica fans will treasure. It is gorgeously melodic and very melancholic sounding as it is based on a B minor scale. It perfectly sits on top of Hetfield's twelve string guitar, picked intro. It has these gorgeous pull offs and hammer ons that are perfect. The B minor arpeggio is also divine and not too showy for what is essentially, a lead part that is more about mood than anything else. The string bends and vibrato employed also make this a fabulous intro to one of the band's most loved songs that will stay in their live show forever more. Ending on an ascending, walking part that showcases Hammett's ability to conclude a solo properly and transition into the next part of the song.
