10 Greatest Ever Metallica Solos

7. The Shortest Straw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2pQ7EEzwC4 The album '...And Justice For All' is (along with Megadeth's 'Rust In Peace') the last word in progressive Thrash Metal. All long songs, an abundance of riffs, complex arrangements and stellar playing. The solo housed within 'The Shortest Straw' is undoubtedly one of Hammett's most inventive and off-the-wall contributions in the band's extensive recorded output. The lead tone on this album, as a whole, is probably my favorite, it's just really dry and gritty. The solo here has so much going on. It opens with some warped notes courtesy of the Floyd Rose whammy bar and has a few harmonics that are used to really great affect. The way in which he uses finger drags up the down the fret board sounds awesome too. The solo runs out on a very Mustaine like pentatonic scale that is shred heaven. I love this solo and can listen time and time again. Play this one just right and you have your party piece sorted for life!

Live and work in Aberdeen, Scotland...unfortunately. Sang in My Minds Weapon (Basick/Drakkar/Sony) for ten years (2002 - 2012) and now just tinkering with various other projects. Die hard Leeds United fan. Metalhead in my heart but also love many other genres of music. Also enjoy anything with Christopher Walken or David Caruso. Family live in Perth, Australia, so have been there many times. Best place in the world.
