10 Greatest Ever Stone Roses Songs

7. Guernica

When you find out one of the songs on this list is another of those songs played backwards you might suspect barrel scraping but that’s not the case. The Stone Roses became so keen on reversing their recordings that it became something of a signature which deserves to be represented here.

The technique does deliver some pretty exciting effects; trippy guitars, vocals that sound like someone speaking in tongues and drum beats that sound like they’re being sucked back out of existence.

The best known of these backwards tracks are Don’t Stop and Full Fathom Five. The former, a reversal of Waterfalls with new lyrics, was included on their debut album. The latter, a backwards version of Elephant Stone, was collected on the singles compilation Turns Into Stone.

More obscure, the real gem of the bunch is Guernica. It’s Made of Stone backwards with a new set of doomy lyrics. The words are based on how the original lyric sounds backwards. They sound even more dark and portentous than Made Of Stone. “It’s the look that stings I fear, boy,” indeed!
