10 Greatest Ever Stone Roses Songs
8. Made Of Stone
Mani’s stalking bass line drives Made of Stone’s wintry, atmospheric verses. Ian Brown sings of knuckles that, “whiten on the wheel/the last thing that your hands will feel.” Accident? Suicide? It isn’t clear. All we know is that the driver can’t help but let loose a scream from their “pink, fat lips.” It’s pretty bleak stuff but the singer insists, “I love the scene.”
Then the song offers a musical catharsis in the form of its irresistible chorus but the lyrical mood remains dark, all cold streets and burning cars.
If it all seems a little grim, the music sounds majestic. Like all The Stone Roses debut album and early singles, the song was co-written by John Squire and Ian Brown. Squire described the song as like, “making a wish and watching it happen, like scoring the winning goal in a cup final on a Harley Electroglide dressed up as Spider-Man.” Patently nonsense but listen to the song and it’s hard to argue.
