7. Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine - The Killers
The first song off the Killer's debut album Hot Fuss is an intense look at a homicide scenario. The song builds with a manic speed as the instruments paint the picture of police helicopters hovering overhead.
As Brandon Flowers enters, the account of Jenny's demise begins as he tells officials about the last time he saw Jenny alive. He describes Jenny and the protagonist on a walk, seemingly at the end of their romantic relationship. The pair proceeds to fight as the narrator lets one detail slip up: "She couldn't scream while I held her close, I swore I'd never let her go."
Once the chorus hits, you realize that this account of the murder has quickly transformed into an investigation as the narrator desperately tries to defend himself as unresponsible in Jenny's murder. With every plea that there is no motive for him killing her, the listener sees clearly through the facade that this love-sick lunatic is delivering.
The song ends with the man's agonized screams and fans are left to wonder the inevitable fate of Jenny's killer. However, the ambiguous nature of this ending is what gives the song an added depth of emotional weight.
