6. Tracy Jacks - Blur
Blur's seminal Britpop masterpiece Parklife has a fun-loving sound but with a slight lyrical twist. The album is a dark look at how the monotonous tone of everyday life can slowly turn normal people to madness. The first example of this type of wordplay comes in "Tracy Jacks," which follows the life of a typical British businessman.
Tracy Jacks goes through his daily routine without a care until his brain suddenly snaps. As he proceeds to go to work, he instead takes a train to Walton, throws his clothes off and runs through the street before getting arrested by the police. He then caps off the week by bulldozing his house down.
The chorus details Mr. Jacks's mindset through this hysteria, as he feels that his professional life as an adult has reached its end and how he finds it overrated to live the rest of his days sitting in his normal house. In lieu of living in normal conditions, Jacks turned to erratic behavior to put some action back into his life, with catastrophic results. A bittersweet tale of what happens when the meaninglessness of middle class life becomes too much to bear.
