10 Greatest Final Rock Albums Of The 1980s

7. Thunder And Lightning - Thin Lizzy

By the time Thin Lizzy were set to record their twelfth studio album in 1983, it was becoming clear that the band was not going to last much longer.

Both guitarist Scott Gorham and drummer Brian Downey had been forced off a European tour due to personal problems and the other members were suffering from a combination of fatigue and other drug-related issues.

It was decided that the tour to promote this new record, Thunder and Lightning, would act as a farewell. Thankfully, they had something great to go out on.

Thunder and Lightning was seen by many as a return to form for the Irishmen and many praised the heavier edge to their music. Even when they were falling to pieces internally, the Liz could still pull out something stellar.

Lead singer Phil Lynott was always hopeful that the band could get back together, but, tragically, it was him that ensured that this wouldn't be possible. Lynott passed away in 1986, aged just 36, ruling out any chances of further Thin Lizzy projects.

The band have continued on in some form, as the group Black Star Riders is made up of some of their members.
