10 Greatest Forgotten Songs Of The 1990s
1. Zoot Suit Riot - Cherry Poppin’ Daddies
Remember when swing music made a brief comeback in the '90s? While Brian Setzer and Jon Favreau were busy sneaking swing music back into the mainstream, a band from Eugene, Oregon released one of the biggest hits of the '90s swing renaissance.
Cherry Poppin’ Daddies were formed in 1989 by bassist Dan Schmid and vocalist Steve Perry. The pair dropped out of college to start a punk band in 1983. Over six years and some line-up changes, the band finally settled on both their name and their sound.
By 1996, ska and swing were enjoying their time back in the sun. It was time for the Daddies to make their move. Up to this point, the band maintained creative control by releasing their records themselves. It was either time to sign with a label, or call it quits. Rather than hang it up, the band signed a two-album deal with Mojo records.
In 1997, the band released the first major label record, Zoot Suit Riot: The Swingin’ Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. Zoot Suit Riot was released as the first single.
The song and accompanying music video launched the Daddies to the forefront of the scene and made Zoot Suit Riot the unofficial theme of the swing revival.
