10 Greatest Forgotten Songs Of The 2000s

8. Modest Mouse - Fire It Up

For no particular reason, Modest Mouse seem to have fallen somewhat out of fashion. From their all-conquering run in the early 2000s, things didn’t fall off but certainly quietened down for the once-lauded outfit, with recent releases met with less than enthusiastic reception.

Their quality heyday, though, went on longer than some would have you believe. 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank doesn’t reach the heights of the two preceding albums, but in Fire It Up, Isaac Brock and co. delivered another slice of their instantly recognisable melancholic but inspiring indie.

It’s a track in the vein of big hit Float On - maybe a little too similar, in fact - a weary, resigned, but still somehow hopeful track built on fragile strings of guitar and bass and Brock’s idiosyncratic vocals.

Fire It Up is the spirited sound of a band ageing gracefully - they’re no longer able to promise that we’ll all float on alright, but they’re still here to deliver something meaningful, inspirational, and just the right amount of sad.
