10 Greatest Guitar Duos In Hard Rock
5. Frank Iero/Ray Toro - My Chemical Romance
As the pop punk explosion started sweeping the nation in the early '00s, there wasn't really an emphasis on being a technically gifted guitar player. Hell, most acts like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte were known to make their millions without even knowing what a solo might even entail. Though the brighter side of MTV may have been a bit too simplistic, we did have an emo tandem for the ages in My Chemical Romance.
Bursting out of the New Jersey underground scene, the interplay between Ray Toro and Frank Iero was some of the most inventive of the entire decade. Across albums like Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, you can tell that these guys are really competent behind their stuff, with Iero having just the right balance of octave runs and power chords to keep the listener engaged. That's before you get to Ray, whose amazing solo runs made for a heavy edged Queen sound, especially when indulging in harmony work.
This all came to a head though on the Black Parade, as Toro matched his classic rock ambitions with Frank's crusty punk attitude. The end result turned into Journey by way of Dead Kennedys, which sounded absolutely amazing across the hooky choruses of songs like The Sharpest Lives and House of Wolves. Whereas other bands might like to stick to what they know, Ray Toro and Frank Iero were the one tandem willing to learn from their heroes and push it that one step further.
