10 Greatest Guitar Duos In Rock Music History
8. Ray Toro and Frank Iero - My Chemical Romance
You don't need some random dude on the Internet to tell you that pop punk isn't the hardest thing to play. Hell, if you looked at people like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan back in the day, a lot of these guys seemed to be focused on how much hair gel they could put in their hair than what an actual guitar scale was. When you get the exceptions out in the wild though, you better be ready for what's to come.
Busting out of the emo scene, the reason why My Chemical Romance was able to soar as high as they did was through the chemistry of Ray Toro and Frank Iero. Even though each of them had completely different approaches to the instrumentation, the way they interwove their playing together felt like the kind of stuff you would hear on old school Queen records from back in the day.
Along with the classic rock shredding that you'd hear out of Ray's amplifier, you had Frank on the other side always twisting the norms of rhythm guitar, going on long octave runs and playing with the melody here and there to make sure that the track was able to propel forward whenever it could. Although it's been a long time since MCR have been able to play on the same grand stages that they filled in the '00s, there's nothing that can break up a symbiotic friendship like this.
