10 Greatest Guitar Duos In Rock Music History
7. Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien - Radiohead
Not every guitarist who gets into music is looking to be the next Eddie Van Halen. If you had asked any of the bands of the '90s how they were planning on becoming a guitar hero, they would probably tell you that they play from the heart instead of about their gear set up. Though that decade humanized the guitarist, Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien are the closest we have to musical robots.
As soon as Radiohead's style of music turned a corner, both Greenwood and O'Brien rose to the challenge in their own unique way. Across OK Computer, you can hear Jonny dialing in different tones for his guitar, along with ripping off chaotic lead lines like on Paranoid Android. By the time that Kid A came around and Greenwood stretched his muscles behind electronic instruments, Ed's attention to detail began to take on a larger role.
Since he always gravitated back to the guitar, a lot of the sonic textures that you're hearing on Radiohead's mid period involved Ed bending over backwards to create sounds that no one would have thought could come out of a guitar just a few years prior. Seeing how much they've done over the past few years, the guitar attack in Radiohead aren't just carving out their own niche in the guitar world. This could very well be a precursor for what the role of the guitar could look like in the future.
