10 Greatest Guitar Riffs Of The 90s

9. Loser - Beck

As crazy as this sounds, the era of the guitar was actually in grave danger in the alternative movement. Even though people were favoring regular songs instead of shredfests, there were also a lot of bands who didn't need to use guitars at all anymore, with people like Nine Inch Nails and the Prodigy eventually showing us what could be done with the power of electronics. Rock was definitely changing, but the guitar can always find its way back into relevance.

Which is strange to even call something like Beck's Loser a "guitar" song. It has the main riff that comes in and out of the song, but it's not like it's the central draw. Most of the intrigue around this song was just how weird it was at the time, with Beck putting on a strange pseudo rap style that was like nothing that anyone had ever heard on the charts.

Then again, the guitar riff itself is still a great callback to the classics, featuring nothing but a bluesy slide guitar riff that sounds reminiscent of something you'd hear at an old blues club during the turn of the century. If anything, it just speaks to how random genres started to be around this time. Like, why the hell not put a guitar in with your rap hybrid song? It'll still sound amazing, so just get out of your own way and do it.
