10 Greatest Guitar Solos Of The '70s
6. Detroit Rock City - KISS
Almost every member of KISS will tell you that they aren't the greatest musicians in the world. For as much as their music may have touched the lives of fans around the world, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have always been candid about their amateurish musical ability when the band was starting. The focus may have been on the theatrics, but there was a certain musical spark at work when you threw on "Detroit Rock City."
Coming right after the band's phenomenal live album Alive!, this one song had everything you wanted from a shock rock act, with a stomping riff and shout along chorus. However, the killer guitar solo didn't come from any one member of the band. Collaborating with superproducer Bob Ezrin, the band tried to assemble the entire track like a short film being played out right in front of you.
Given his experience working with Alice Cooper, Ezrin constructed the guitar solo in the vein of an ancient Roman battle, with guitar harmonies that sound like the beginning of a mighty joust. That grandiose sound might only be soundtracking a young punk's journey to a rock concert, but this one solo turned a pretty kickass KISS song into a mini cinematic event being played out through your headphones.
