10 Greatest Guitar Solos Of The '70s

3. Hotel California - Eagles

For as many adjectives that could be used to describe the Eagles, heavy is not really one of them. In fact, almost any of the band's songs wouldn't be that out of place on a summertime road trip with a bunch of your friends. On the other hand, years of songwriting finally gave the band the opportunity to pull out the big guns on "Hotel California."

Centered around the concept of a slightly-supernatural rest stop in the Sunshine State, the solo feels like you're being transported into the Twilight Zone, as Joe Walsh and Don Felder weave solos like cloth. Right as you get finished with the precision of Felder's leads, Walsh blows right past him with some down and dirty blues licks. The dichotomy of these two guitar players playing in sync also fits perfectly with the song's themes of the dream turning into a nightmare.

If the guitar duel wasn't epic enough, the entire song caps off with Felder and Walsh playing in harmony with each other as we descend deeper into the heart of California. The entire solo section is almost longer than the song itself, but the licks are so good that you don't even seem to notice it. There may be some dated material in the Eagles' catalog, but this one track may have the capacity to outlive rock itself.
