10 Greatest Hard Rock Frontmen Of The '70s

2. Steven Tyler - Aerosmith

After the British Invasion came sweeping in from across the pond, the new influx of American rock bands really needed to step up their game. No matter how much tunefulness came with acts like the Byrds, there was no way for them to measure up to the sheer power that someone like Mick Jagger had whenever he graced the stage. Though Jim Morrison of the Doors was a step in the right direction, Aerosmith blew the doors off the hinges with Steven Tyler.

While Tyler was originally lumped up with a bunch of other copycat Stones bands, he quickly outgrew his idols as one of the most awe-inspiring frontmen of the decade. Being the most seasoned player in Aerosmith, Tyler's every move seemed to be about feeding off the energy of the audience, whether it came from the way he strutted across the stage to the way he interacted with Joe Perry. As far as image goes as well, albums like Rocks and Draw the Lines painted the picture of Tyler as the musical outlaw, looking to roam across the land in search of the next thrill.

Going forward, Tyler's image would prove to foreshadow the many hair bands coming out of the '80s, taking the template of what Tyler did and coating it in glam pastiches. On the other hand, once you see the original, why would you need any other substitute?
