10 Greatest Hard Rock Guitar Solos Of All Time

9. Detroit Rock City - KISS

KISS may have been riding high after their live record Alive!, but the pressure really started to sink in once they entered into the studio. With a multi-platinum release under their belt, these punks from New York had to make a statement that showed them to be more than just smoke and bombs.

Destroyer certainly made an impact, but producer Bob Ezrin was the lynchpin that really made it blow up. When Paul Stanley came into the studio with "Detroit Rock City," Ezrin knew that a typical guitar solo from Ace Frehley wasn't going to suffice. After taking the track home, Ezrin sat down at his piano and composed the harmony guitar part on his own before bringing it into the band.

Given the band's lack of musical ability, they had never done too much harmony work, but decided to give it a shot. What they ended up with was one of the most dizzying guitar parts of the 70's, which is the perfect representation of the song's wild drive through the city.

KISS may have had their backs against the wall when making this record, but this solo showed the entire rock world they didn't need the makeup to create something truly extraordinary.
