10 Greatest INXS Songs Of All Time

6. What You Need

Arguably the most memorable of the band's hits which, while sticking closely to the signature INXS rock formula, is a damn catchy tune that just works. Hutchence's searing lyrics boom out over Pengilly's saxophone, letting us all know that he has exactly what we desire. The song is also uplifting, letting us believe that all our pain will soon go away.

The orchestral-like sound works brilliantly here again, the machinations of each band member bringing its own energy to the song. The song was pivotal in the band's foray into the States, reaching number 5 there while setting INXS up for the success that was to come.

The song's true legacy though is in anchoring one of the band's weaker albums, Listen Like Thieves, and ensuring their momentum continued in an upward trajectory. There were several songs released as singles from the album, but it all had a rather pedestrian feel, with only the rock ballad This Time coming close to matching the quality of What You Need.
