10 Greatest Love Songs In Rock Music History

9. Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen

Writing about love isn't something exclusive to music though. Since the early days of writing, people like Shakespeare have been putting some of the heartbreaking tragedies and tales of love into their writing since the dawn of time. Shakespeare may have had Romeo and Juliet, but the Boss got the rag tag team busting out on Thunder Road.

Although Springsteen has been known to indulge in his fair share of tunes about freedom, the whole thing is flipped on its head here when you have the narrator talking to Mary about what lies just on the outskirts of town. For the past few years, you can tell that these people have been working in dead end jobs and have been trying their best for something to come and save them from their boring lives back home.

As soon as you hear the tempo pick up, there's a lot more reassurance here. Equipped with a guitar that he can speak with, the narrator is looking to take Mary to some place beyond their meaningless lives. No one's going to come and save them, so they have to be the ones to save themselves, and the final minutes of this song play out like some cinematic movie as they manage to drive off into the distance. The losers in this town may have their spirits crushed, but nothing can stop a heart that's playing to win.
