10 Greatest Love Songs In Rock Music History

7. I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend - Ramones

When you get to the heavier sides of rock music, it gets a little bit harder to sell the idea of a love song. Since you're trying your hardest to come off like a badass, where the hell is the 'badass in love' angle supposed to fit into the equation? Though the Ramones were definitely the real deal in the '70s, their debut record showed us that you could still wear your heart on your sleeve.

Compared to the more high energy songs like Beat on the Brat or Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue, I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend is one of the most bubblegum pop songs to have the Ramones attached to it, with Joey Ramone getting his womanizer schtick on by trying to win his crush's affection. Looking at it from that angle, it's almost wholesome seeing this whole thing go down, with the rest of the band doing their best boy band backing vocals in the background.

Above all else, this was the kind of punk rock song that didn't have to rely on sounding nihilistic to win you over in the end. The Ramones definitely had a nasty streak when they wanted to, but that didn't mean that everything they did had to be hard-edged. Punks have hearts too, and there's no shame in getting into some romance while wearing a leather jacket.
