10 Greatest Love Songs In Rock

5. Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney

At the start of the '70s, it seemed that most of the Beatles had started to go off the rails. As John Lennon settled into primal therapy and George Harrison getting into transcendental meditation, you knew something was off when the most successful solo career in the early days was actually Ringo Starr. However, Paul McCartney did at least have one ace in the hole with Maybe I'm Amazed.

Compared to the rest of Paul's first solo outing, this track sticks out like a sore thumb, as most of the rest of the record feels more like a demo album, with most of the tracks kept pretty raw. Done under wraps in Abbey Road Studios, this song was the first sign that McCartney would have a life outside of the Fab Four, being one of the boldest declarations of love he had made up until this point. Aside from the traditional love songs he would write with John Lennon in the early days, this at least feels like it's coming from a genuine place, as he speaks of the wonder of love he finds in his new wife Linda.

The strength is also in the construction, as Paul shows both aspects of love, from the floating on air feeling you get from the verses to the elation that comes with his screams in the choruses. Love might not be something he fully understands, but the hope that it brings him is enough to hook him in.
