10 Greatest Masked Bands In Rock History
2. Gwar
In terms of longevity, Gwar should absolutely be at the top of this list.
They're one of the few bands in the world with a plot, as they established themselves as a group of interplanetary warriors back in the mid-80s.
Through the use of increasingly-elaborate masks and costumes, Gwar have grown from a joke band into one of the most recognisable units in the genre today.
At this point, more people have been members of Gwar than the US Senate.
Over the years we've seen all sort of crazy characters play or sing for the band; there's been Beefcake the Mighty; Hans Orifice; Flatus Maximus; Vulvatron; Sawborg Destructo; and The Sexecutioner.
None of those are made-up.
These absolutely bonkers personas have earned the band legions of fans over the years, as listeners have fallen in love with their commitment to this utterly ludicrous idea.
The prosthetics that bring Gwar to life are often used in their stage shows to great effect. You never know what you're going to get at one of their shows, but you just know it's going to be over-the-top.
Gwar are a whole load of fun, and sometimes that's all you need.
