10 Greatest Masked Bands In Rock History

3. Ghost

We've mentioned mask bands creating a mythology around themselves already, but Swedish band Ghost take that idea to a whole new level.

Formerly known as Ghost B.C. for legal reasons, this group has been lead by several different version of the same character, the Satanic priest Papa Emeritus.

There have been four Emerituses over the years, all of which have been played by OG band member Tobias Forge. Forge is actually the only member of Ghost to have had his identity revealed to the public, as part of a lawsuit over royalties in 2017.

Music lawyers - the real Satanists.

With Emeritus as their leader, the rest of the band are known simply as "Nameless Ghouls". The Ghouls have no defining features, their faces hidden by masks so as not to upstage their demonic master.

They've spoken in interviews a couple of times, but their true names remain a secret.

Ghost keep up this narrative across their music, live shows, music videos, and press releases, offering an immersive musical experience like no one else.

Their creativity seemingly know no bounds, so who knows how many Papa Emerituses there will be before they finally decide to pack it all in.
