10 Greatest Metal Bassists Ever
8. John Myung
For metal, some bassists tend to perform in conjunction with the guitar more than anything else. To make a great bassline, most players will just follow the main guitar riff or hold down on root notes to achieve that heavy effect. Then again, most bassists aren't John Myung.
Originally studying at the Berklee College of Music, Myung's talent behind the bass was bound to be something truly extravagant. Across Dream Theater's discography, Myung has proved to be the prog-metal mad scientist when it comes to the four-string. When you listen to a Dream Theater bassline, Myung's playing is incredibly wild while still being meticulously mapped out. The way Myung hammers out complex riffs at a furious pace can put even some top-tier guitarists to shame.
That's not to say that what Myung does isn't musical though. Even if Myung can play a thousand notes per second, he has always been able to build a sonic structure on each Dream Theater track. When Myung then locks in with John Petrucci's fretwork, the results are always awe-inspiring. In a band that thrives on complexity, John Myung's basslines are what any musician should study if they are serious about their craft.
