10 Greatest One Hit Wonders Of The 1980s

1. Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners

When people normally think of one hit wonders, there's generally a good reason why the artists in question never go on to have a second hit. Either their sound was just too weird to take seriously or they weren't the least bit talented to withstand a career as pop stars. Every now and again though, you get a legit band who should have never been left by the wayside at all.

Although it's easy to see why Dexy's Midnight Runners wouldn't have been taken seriously in the first place, with Kevin Rowland's strange squawk leading the charge. When it's paired with Come On Eileen though, everything makes sense, as he attempts to write the Celtic equivalent of Born to Run about a couple moving out of their burnt out town and making new lives for themselves.

It's also strange that this even got on the charts, being the polar opposite of the likes of Michael Jackson's Thriller, which came out at the exact same time. Even though Dexy's only stayed together for a few more years after the album Too Ry Aye, their back catalog consists of some of the greatest music that the start of the decade ever produced.
