10 Greatest One-Hit Wonders Of The '80s
6. Kajagoogoo - "Too Shy"
Despite boasting one of the worst band names of all time, Kajagoogoo’s debut single must be one of the finest introductions to a group ever recorded. With this bass slapping beauty, they stormed straight to the top of the pop charts in the UK and elsewhere, then never threatened to make anything nearly so successful ever again.
“Too Shy” is eighties royalty. Aside from the Kajagoogoo boys, the track and album from which it came was produced by Duran Duran keyboardist and bleach enthusiast Nick Rhodes, as well as the Durans’ producer Colin Thurston.
Kajagoogoo’s smash hit apes the structure of many Duran Duran songs in that no two parts of the song sound at all alike. If not for the snakey bassline you could be baffled as to what you’re listening to before that iconic, semi-nonsensical chorus kicks in.
With a plethora of synth sounds and gated drums, “Too Shy” is a manmade delight, music for particularly extravagant automatons. Returns would diminish from there, with follow up “Ooh to Be Ah” maintaining the group’s penchant for nonsense with none of the cool.
