10 Greatest Pop Punk Bands Of All Time

9. Sum 41

You can't really classify pop punk as anything but suburban music. For all of its dangerous elements, this was the kind of edgy pop music that would have fit right in in the halls of any middle school you went into. While each band had a different approach to teenage angst, Sum 41 actually proved that they could roll with the changes.

Then again, you wouldn't have thought that from their first few records, which were as by the numbers pop punk as you could get. Though never downright awful, songs like Fat Lip and Motivation were the stereotypical face of pop punk for a generation of kids. As time has go on though, these four brats from Canada actually managed to grow the hell up, starting with incorporating metal riffs on albums like Chuck. Across songs like the Bitter End, their take on Metallica-style thrash was actually a great way of breaking out of the normal punk formula.

After Deryck Whibley went through a few rough patches though, it was stunning to see them come back into the fold even heavier than usual. With 13 Voices and Order in Decline kicking the door down, Sum 41 has almost shifted from their adolescent phase to a weird hybrid of hard rock and punk, even expanding their lineup to a 3 guitar attack. For a genre that's all about eternal youth, the journey of Sum 41 proves that it's sometimes cool to grow up.
