10 Greatest Pop Punk Bands Of All Time
5. PUP
There's probably a lot of twentysomethings these days who see the pop punk genre as nothing more than a phase they went through. No matter how much talent was present in the scene then or now, the sounds of something like Simple Plan might churn more than a few stomachs from those wanting to leave their high school years in the past. For all the goofy stuff though, there always someone willing to push the boundaries of what the genre can do.
Ever since the turn of the 2010's, the pop punk genre has turned itself inside and out, with PUP being the big frontrunner as of late. Taking a much darker tinge than their heroes, this outfit out of the Midwest is something much closer to full-on punk than something like Busted or Good Charlotte. Much darker than usual, albums like Morbid Stuff are exactly what they say on the tin, even going full on punk ragers on some of the cuts.
Once you give it the full sit though, the actual material on PUP's records still have a lot in common with the more straight ahead grooves that made us all love the genre in the early '00s. While they might be bending the rules of what constitutes pop punk, the DNA of these songs still have that shared lineage with acts like Jimmy Eat World and Yellowcard from days gone by.
