10 Greatest Posthumous Rock Songs
9. What I Got - Sublime
Sublime is the one '90s band that really deserved a much better fate. Coming out of the ska punk scene, the writing of Bradley Nowell was one of the more creative of the last part of the decade, with songs that sounded like the Beach Boys if they were raised on the wrong side of the tracks. Just when these guys seemed to be hitting their creative pinnacle, Nowell was found dead in his hotel room after having relapsed and overdosed on heroin.
With no band left to promote the record, the label still released the self-titled album, which gave us one of the greatest sunshine rock songs in What I Got. While you get a lot of seedy characters sprinkled across the record, this is the one song where you know that everything is going to be okay, as Nowell's breezy acoustic guitar strums away as he talks about the love he has for everything in life.
Even the reworking of the track later on in the album is fantastic, as they abandon the commercial DJ scratches for a solo vocal from Nowell. Considering this would have been like a new beginning for the group, it's a shame we couldn't see where this slice of mellow guitar pop could have gone had Brad lived.
