10 Greatest Punk Bands Of All Time

6. Misfits

Punk is a genre not only defined by its sound but also by its look. From the torn-up jeans to the leather jackets to the safety pin through the nose, punk was as much about the fashion in its prime as it was about a new musical revolution. Though the Misfits can definitely be categorized as punk, their approach was a bit more theatrical than most.

With Glenn Danzig upfront, the Misfits were one of the first true horror punk bands, with makeup that felt like a more dangerous version of something like KISS. Instead of blaring out odes to rock and roll like Gene Simmons, these songs were some of the most gruesome accounts in the punk repertoire, which spanned from monster stories to graverobbing.

For as much as the Misfits were a punk band at their core, their dramatic look and style made them fit right in with the hard rock and metal crowd as well. Look no further than a band like Metallica, who covered a handful of Misfits cuts, as well as the new guard of horror punk bands like AFI and Alkaline Trio picking up where the band left off. Punk was already known as a nastier genre, but the Misfits took that one step further from wild to absolutely terrifying.
