10 Greatest Rock Albums That Are Totally Acoustic

1. MTV Unplugged in New York - Nirvana

It's hard not to see the final months of Nirvana as anything but a time bomb waiting to go off. With Kurt Cobain getting more and more messed up as the tour for In Utero went on, everything seemed to come to a head when he was found dead just between two legs of the tour. While his frail state of mind may have been on its last legs, Cobain gave us one last salvo of genius before departing from this earth.

Despite other grunge icons like Pearl Jam already appearing on MTV Unplugged at the time, Nirvana's appearance was a much different beast. Miles away from songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit, this is a much more somber affair, with each song being about the cold lament of death. From the dark depression of Dumb to the amazing rendition of David Bowie's the Man Who Sold the World, it's almost like you're watching Cobain perform at his own funeral, which became all too prophetic just months later.

As opposed to the regular stripped versions of classics, Unplugged in New York is a peek inside the mind of grunge's most gifted mind in its final days, culminating in the blues standard Where Did You Sleep Last Night?, where you can practically feel some of Cobain's soul come through his voice. No one could have predicted that Cobain would kill himself later down the line, but if his days were numbered, this is one hell of a note to go out on.
