10 Greatest Rock And Roll Collab Songs

2. Hunger Strike - Temple of the Dog

The collective wind seemed to be knocked out of grunge's sails the minute that Andy Wood passed away. While many fans chalk up the death of the genre to the day that Kurt Cobain passed away, the genre really lost its innocence once this musical ray of light died of an overdose in the early '90s. We needed to pick up the pieces though, and Chris Cornell had a great idea to pay tribute to Andy for Temple of the Dog.

Calling this a collaboration in the traditional sense feels wrong though, considering this was a band just made up of Chris and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron working with ex members of Mother Love Bone. No, what makes this a true collaboration is what would happen later down the line, as surviving members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard formed the crux of Pearl Jam, with Mike McCready already in tow on this album.

And while Chris does the majority of the vocals across this record, Hunger Strike featured a young up and coming singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder, whom Jeff and Stone had been rehearsing with during the recording sessions. Even though there's only one line of verse and a chorus to fill out the song, it feels complete when both Eddie and Chris go back and forth, with Eddie singing the second verse and keeping everything anchored on the chorus while Chris soars above him. Nothing will be able to bring Andy back, but songs like this are what help us all move on.
