10 Greatest Rock Bands With More Than Two Guitarists
2. Lynyrd Skynyrd
Strap yourselves in, folks, 'cos this story is about to get wild.
According to Wikipedia, Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd have had 27 different members since their formation in 1964. Of those 27, eight have played guitar, leading to several different periods where the band had three guitarists at the same time.
On their first album, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins switched between lead and rhythm, whilst Ed King took care of various fills and one solo on the song Mississippi Kid. King would stick around until 1975.
Steve Gaines joined for the album Street Survivors, but he died in a plane crash in 1977 that also killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. After this tragedy, Skynyrd took a break until 1991.
On that album, Rossington, a returning Ed King, and newcomer Randall Hall shared guitar duties. By the album Twenty, King and Hall had gone and Hughie Thomasson and Ricky Medlocke had taken their spots. Thomasson was replaced by Mark Matejka in 2006, giving the band their final three-guitar structure.
Big up to Gary Rossington by the way, who was the only man to stay in the band throughout all that madness. He passed away earlier this year.
