10 Greatest Rock Guitar Solos Of The 90s
7. Trippin On a Hole in a Paper Heart - Stone Temple Pilots
There has always been a bit of a stigma held against Stone Temple Pilots from day one. Since they were known as the grunge band that came out of San Diego, what did they have to bring to the sound that rainy Seattle made so popular at the time? Once the grunge empire started to fall though, it was time for STP to get a little bit weird on their follow up album Tiny Music.
Trading in their dirty tones for something a lot more stripped down and clean, this is one of the prettier records STP have released, which comes to a climax on Trippin On a Hole in a Paper Heart. Along with an almost funk style strumming pattern for most of the song, Dean DeLeo really has a great understanding of melody on this song, especially with a guitar that sounds like it's hitting you right in the face the minute you listen to it.
Being a student of jazz leaning players, you can hear that in spades in every note choice he makes, having a lot more in common with modern day jazz cats like Pat Metheny with some of his patterns. Though the credibility of the band was always a point of contention with some OG grunge fans, you have to respect the musicality when you're able to throw together something like this without batting an eye.
