10 Greatest Rock Guitar Solos Of The 90s
8. Bulls on Parade - Rage Against the Machine
Not every guitar solo on this list necessarily has to be one of the greatest scale exercises put to tape. Out of all of the '90s bands to come out, it was more about what made you stand apart from the rest of the crowd and how you could bend your guitar into different shapes and sounds. And once you heard Bulls on Parade, you got one of the few guitar solos that is pretty much impossible to replicate.
From day one, Tom Morello was always looking to do something different with his guitar tone, and when he stumbled upon the more electronic side of the guitar, things got a lot more interesting. Throughout most of the solo break of this song, Morello practically acts as the impromptu DJ in the band, warping his guitar tone with different effects and scratching his hand across the strings to simulate turntables.
Even though there are no notes being played, there's still a lot of musicality here, with Tom playing around with rhythm and making a solo that stretches beyond the regular confines of what people like Eddie Van Halen were doing back in the day. When the record eventually came out, there were even disclaimers put in the liner notes explaining that everything was in fact played by Morello and wasn't glossed over in the studio. Morello could easily pull off the fast scale runs if he wanted to, but it's more fun to make sounds that no one else was used to.
