10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 2000s

6. Renegades Of Funk - Rage Against The Machine

At time of writing, the most recent studio release from pioneering funk metal troublemakers Rage Against the Machine is Renegades, a selection of covers from rock’s greatest pot-stirrers.

From hip-hop legends like Cypress Hill and Eric B. & Rakim to classic rock staples The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, Rage take them all on, but the song from Renegades that has best stood the test of time is the one from which it takes its name.

Originally released by legendary rapper and beat-crafter Afrika Bambaataa in 1983, Renegades of Funk was given a modern spin by Zack de la Rocha and co. as the album’s lead single.

Initially an electronic dance track, the Rage version is entirely their own, fusing intricate funk-style bass work with heavy guitars and bouncing drums to create something that is as easy to head bang to as it is to get down and groove with.

Renegades of Funk also features some of de la Rocha’s fastest ever rapping, as he just barely gets the words out without his tongue tripping over itself.
