10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 2000s

7. Band on the Run - Foo Fighters

If you were celebrating Record Store Day in 2011, then you might have been lucky enough to get your hands on a limited edition Foo Fighters vinyl called Medium Rare, a collection of B-sides and covers from one of modern rock’s biggest bands.

Alongside versions of songs by Cream, Ramones, and Gerry Rafferty, the album also contains a song that was originally part of the CD single release of My Hero. It’s a song everyone should know, but with a little more oomph; the band’s ode to Paul McCartney and Wings, Band on the Run.

The Foos’ version, which was originally released in 2007 on a CD celebrating 40 years of BBC Radio 1, is much harder than Macca’s, having received a serious injection of hard rock. Though it lacks some of the whimsy of the base song, it’s definitely got more appeal for fans of brash guitars and semi-screamed lyrics.

McCartney himself has endorsed this take on many occasions, performing live with the band a few times. If it’s good enough for the man who wrote the original, then it’s good enough for everyone else.
