10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 2010s

2. Come Together - Gary Clark Jr. And Junkie XL

Conventional wisdom is that you don’t cover The Beatles. You just don’t do it. How is anyone ever going to improve some of the best songs ever written? It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Sometimes though, on very rare occasions, somebody comes along and does the Fab Four justice. This was one of those times.

Gary Clark Jr., a very talented neo-blues guitarist and singer, and Junkie XL, the Dutch DJ best known for his 2002 remix of Elvis Presley’s A Little Less Conversation, joined forces to record a version of Come Together for the soundtrack to the movie Justice League.

Unlike the film, people actually liked the cover version.

There’s a real filthy edge to this song, like it's the original song’s renegade cousin. Clark’s voice is astonishingly good and it fits this higher-energy, more groovier arrangement of the song to a tee. The guitar breakdown in the middle is also excellent, so much so that Baz Luhrmann nicked it for a pivotal sequence in his 2022 Elvis biopic.

Good Beatles covers are rare, but when done right, they’re something truly special.
