10 Greatest Rock Music Frontmen Of The 60s
1. Sly Stone
The former leader of the Family Stone is essentially off the map in 2022; save for the odd appearance he seems to keep to himself, and one can only hope he’s doing better than he has been in recent history. Because, personal problems aside, the man is one of the most incredible remaining rock and roll icons we have left.
Stone was a musical marvel from a young age, picking up instruments like it came naturally. After a stint as a producer, he formed the Family Stone, and the group broke down barriers both musical and societal. They pushed funk forward with their wild, psychedelic, hard edged sound, and were one of the earliest bands to feature a multi-racial, mixed gender line up.
Stone was the crazed leader at the centre of the carnival. On stage, his band was so tight that he could do whatever he wanted, dropping to pound on a keyboard before showing off his remarkable vocal range, then taking a dance break. As the band progressed and became more fraught, Stone took over more aspects of the creative process, eventually playing just about every note on the band’s albums.
He was a true visionary, a mad scientist in a rock star’s body. Name a genre, and Stone probably changed it forever.
