10 Greatest Rock Music Gigs Of The 1990s
3. Nirvana Unplugged In New York
Right....like you thought we would go this entire list of best gigs of the '90s and not bring up Nirvana? Other than having one of the greatest albums of the decade to their name with Nevermind, Kurt Cobain's apathetic demeanor was what paved the way for the rest of the alternative revolution to follow. These weren't just a bunch of kids making noise though. These were serious musicians, and their Unplugged session was more than proof of that magic.
After being looked at more for their aesthetic than their music, Cobain saw this as a way to look at the more intimate side of the band, complete with obscure covers by bands like the Vaselines and the Meat Puppets. Alongside some of their greatest songs like Polly and All Apologies, the highlights of the night are them going through different material like David Bowie's the Man Who Sold the World or their pass at the Meat Puppets' Oh Me.
They really did save the best moment for last though, with their rip roaring version of Lead Belly's Where Did You Sleep Last Night culminating in Kurt giving one final look at the camera before letting out his final scream. While there might not be any medium to prove this, the last few bars of that song might show Kurt Cobain fully leaving his body for a few seconds.
