10 Greatest Rock Music Guitar Solos Of The 1990s

7. Hangar 18 - Megadeth

Thrash metal may have been a very 80s genre, but one of its biggest backers carried on well into the 90s and beyond.

The band’s first album of the decade (their fourth overall) was the wonderfully titled Rust in Peace, which came out in September of 1990. This song didn’t come out as a single until the following year - the completely bonkers Hangar 18.

The song is as high concept as thrash metal gets; it’s about secret building on an American airbase that is supposedly home to various crashed alien spaceships. So far, so Megadeth, and that trend continues with the wild guitar solo.

Dave Mustaine and Marty Feldman go back and forth on this one, duelling it out like two warring factions in an epic galactic war. The solo goes on for a good long while, showcasing the two players’ speed, skill, and melodic abilities. It’s definitely the centrepiece of this eclectic, exciting piece.

The British public clearly liked what they were being sold, as Hangar 18 reached number 26 on the nation’s singles charts.

A Megadeth song in the top 30, those were the days.
