10 Greatest Rock Music Guitar Solos Of The 1990s

6. Superunknown - Soundgarden

Superunknown, the fourth album from grunge icons Soundgarden, was the one that really catapulted the band to superstardom.

Badmotorfinger had been big, but this was massive, going six-times platinum in the States and spawning some of the band’s best ever tracks, like Spoonman, Fell on Black Days, and Black Hole Sun.

Any number of solos from this album could have made this list, including the songs just mentioned, but it’s about time the title track got some of the love it sorely deserves.

The song Superunknown, one of two songs co-written by Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil, is as gigantic as anything else on the record. The drums are completely out of control, with the bouncy riff trying its best to catch up. When it comes to the solo, chaos once again wins the day, with Thayil launching into a procession of unruly notes. It shouldn’t work, but it really does.

It’s easy to see how a song like this could get buried under so many other great tunes, but next time you put on some Soundgarden, spare a thought for this underrated little trooper.
