10 Greatest Rock Music Guitar Solos Of The 1990s

5. Under A Glass Moon - Dream Theater

Like with Dinosaur Jr., you’re either going to really love Dream Theater or be completely baffled by them.

These undisputed heavyweights of prog metal have been crafting long, intricate suites since their formation in 1985, putting out their first album in 1989, and then their second, Images and Words, in 1992.

That’s the one that gave the world Under a Glass Moon.

At just over seven minutes, Under a Glass Moon is actually one of the shorter songs on the record. It opens with singer James LaBrie’s typically piercing cries, before he then takes a considerable break to let guitarist John Petrucci do what he does best.

Petrucci’s sweeping, swooping arrangement dominates the back half of the song, veering from sharp and short to technically astounding, helped along the way by the band’s signature fusion of guitar and synthesiser tones.

A guitar expert from About.com place Under a Glass Moon in their list of the 100 best guitar solos of all time, which is pretty good going. Although, if you like your solos lengthy and varied, then most Dream Theater songs will do you right.
