10 Greatest Secret Weapons In Rock And Roll

9. Matt Cameron - Pearl Jam/Soundgarden

No one really singles out the drummer when talking about the greatest songwriters of all time. Unless your name is Phil Collins or write the lyrics for a living like Neil Peart, chances are your job is to just hold down the beat and make sure every song comes together without a hitch. Amid the grunge revolution though, Matt Cameron was the one drummer who rose above them all.

Being a founding member of Soundgarden and a mainstay in the Seattle scene, Cameron's drumming is most indicative of the grunge sound, having an intense amount of muscle in between the heavy drum hits. When manning the skins for Soundgarden though, his drumming style helped broaden the group's horizons in the beginning, expertly shifting through time signature changes like on Outshined or Fell on Black Days.

Even the more straightforward songs like Black Hole Sun are amazing for the drum performance alone, as Cameron creates the perfect drum fills that you can almost sing every time they come on. Alongside his brethren in the Sound Table, Cameron managed to get the break of a lifetime by being drafted into Pearl Jam after Soundgarden, giving him an outlet for his musical talents to this day. From Temple of the Dog to Superunknown to even Gigaton all these years later, Matt Cameron's drumming is what the real sound of grunge sounds like.
