10 Greatest Sequel Songs In Rock Music History
7. Footsteps - Pearl Jam
When Stone Gossard started shopping around demos for his new material after Mother Love Bone, he wasn't expecting anything too ambitious. Even when some singers started to come to him with some interest, a lot of the lyrics were more about tributes to the late frontman Andy Wood than actually moving forward. Just south of Seattle though, Stone's music caught the ear of Eddie Vedder, who was looking to be a lot more adventurous on his first few songs.
Though the original demo that Eddie was given would eventually birth songs like Alive, each one of the songs connects into a trilogy of songs Vedder called Mamason. As Alive opens up everything, it is followed by Once, which shows our hero going out on a killing spree after cutting off contact with his family. Towards the end of the story comes Footsteps, which ended up on the B-sides of their debut album Ten.
After going on a killing spree, this is the sad final hours of this man's life, as he sits in jail awaiting his persecution in just a few hours. With a spare acoustic guitar riff and Eddie's tortured vocals, this feels like our protagonist has nothing left, seemingly at his wit's end and having no hope but the void of death. Considering this was the first thing that got the ball rolling for Pearl Jam, this is putting your darkest foot forward to kick off your career.
