10 Greatest Sequel Songs In Rock Music History

8. Jenny Wren - Paul McCartney

For a long time, most of Paul McCartney's output was trying to distance himself from what he had done with the Beatles. As much as Wings may have been a fun project back in the day, Macca wasn't keen to live in the shadow of the Fab Four either, and his more risky albums like Press to Play are examples of him shooting himself in the foot trying to come up with something different. With age comes perspective though, and Paul really learned to embrace his old self on Jenny Wren.

On the whole, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard is one of Paul's most Beatles-adjacent projects from his later years, until you get to the song Jenny Wren. Being a downtempo tune of Paul just messing around with an acoustic guitar, this was designed to be a spiritual sequel to Blackbird, with the same fingerpicked guitar sequence and Paul telling a story about a young girl trying to break free from everything bringing her down day after day.

With the help of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, this is a track that could have easily fit on the White Album back in the '60s, having the same happy go lucky energy that Paul was always known for, only now with a slightly more serious tone. There's a whole lot more life experience between the days of Flower Power, but that signature knack for writing melodies never really goes away, does it?
