10 Greatest T. Rex Songs Ever
6. Children of The Revolution
“I drive a Rolls Royce, ‘cos it’s good for my voice,” is one of the all time great rock star lyrics, at once grand and arrogant and funny and ridiculous. Some people have interpreted this song as a dig at John Lennon, who wrote musical manifestos but drove a Rolls Royce and lived in stately pile in the country. The lyrics also reference Twist And Shout, a song covered by The Beatles.
Whatever the meaning, Children Of The Revolution has a killer melody and a surging Tony Visconti score. The song has become all things to all people, an encouragement to rebellion and the soundtrack to a car ad (though, weirdly, it was used to flog the Fiat 500 rather than Rolls Royces).
The song hit number two on the charts, which at the time was considered a let-down after a string of four number one hits. That says more about T. Rex’s incredible popularity than it does about Children Of The Revolution, which is one of Marc Bolan’s most enduring and popular hits.
