10 Greatest T. Rex Songs Ever
7. Metal Guru
“Mwhah-ahah-yeeeah!” Is the cry that opens both Metal Guru and the song’s parent album, The Slider. It’s the inarticulate sound of triumph, unshakeable confidence and unalloyed joy.
The Slider followed the breakthrough album that was Electric Warrior and the band’s biggest hit Get It On, and finds Marc Bolan in his imperious, imperial phase. If he was confident before, this is next level. The song succeeds on the strength of its wall of sound drumbeat, the high pitched “ooh yeah, yeah, yeah”s and Tony Visconti’s soaring strings.
Some of the vaguely religious references in the lyrics might be confusing so let’s here Marc explain it in his own words:
“Its a festival of life song. I relate 'Metal Guru' to all gods around. I believe in a god, but I have no religion. With 'Metal Guru', it's like someone special, it must be a godhead. I thought how god would be, he'd be all alone without a telephone. I don't answer the phone any more. I have codes where people ring me at certain times.”
Hope that clears everything up for you.
