10 Greatest T. Rex Songs Ever

3. Laser Love

Laser love is a propulsive track notable for a killer riff, strong bassline and a spectacular guitar solo. By this point T. Rex were without super producer Tony Visconti, who had manned the controls for the band’s biggest hits. He had been driven away by Bolan’s drug use and massive ego.

Nonetheless, Bolan proves that in producing himself he can still provide a captivating arrangement complete with handclaps and powerful backing vocals from his girlfriend Gloria Jones of Tainted Love fame.

Released in 1976, the song bears a striking resemblance to The Rolling Stones' Start Me Up - to the point, it could even be Jagger singing Bolan’s opening “yeah!” exclamation. But while The Stones’ song was a top ten hit five years later, Laser Love stalled outside the top 40.

It’s a shame. You can imagine had things gone differently the band could have had a successful second act to their career, reinventing themselves as ageing arena rockers.
