10 Greatest T. Rex Songs Ever

2. Soul Of My Suit

In 1977 Bolan died tragically in a car crash. It was just as Bolan had turned his life around, taking punk upstarts The Damned on tour and hosting a hit TV show, Marc.

Plus, only months before he died he had released his finest album in years, Dandy In The Underworld. Though he was the only original band member, the album played to his former strengths whilst also seeming to predict New Romanticism and the sort of sounds frenemy David Bowie would later explore on Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).

One of the highlights is Soul of My Suit, which bursts into life on some sublime backing vocals before marrying a near militaristic beat to one of Bolan’s most charming melodies and sincere vocal performances on the verses before a shower of shimmering strings arrive for the chorus.

As sad as his death was, it’s good to know he was in a good place creatively, putting out some of his best work and receiving some good reviews before the end. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see where he was heading next.
